Gold Medal Award


         At the 43rd International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Kanoot Jaruthamsophon from Human Genetics Unit, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University was awarded the Gold Medal for his outstanding invention: genetic screening kit predicting drug reaction from carbamazepine.

        Also, this screening kit has been selected by the National Research Council of Thailand, one out of 69 inventions, as a representative of Thai inventions to be presented internationally. This work was a part of the curriculum for residents in clinical pathology under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Pornprot Limprasert, MD, PhD, who served as the advisor.

        The development of such an examination for certain genetic traits that indicate a possible adverse drug reaction to carbamazepine was selected for being beneficial in not only the safe dispensation of antibiotics, but also the reduction of the risk of severe drug allergies as well as the selection of appropriate alternative medicines.

        The invention has already been patented at the PSU Intellectual Property Office through the assistance of Asst. Prof. Akkharawit Kanjanaopas, PhD, the Director of Price of Songkla University Science Park. Moreover, it has been included in the creation of a research project model, the testing model development of which will be concluded within 2015.
